പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യകതയെപ്പറ്റി 1962-ൽ അമേരിക്കൻ സമുദ്രജീവി ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ റേച്ചൽ കാഴ്സൺ എഴുതിയ 'സൈലന്റ് സ്പ്രിങ്ങ്' എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന് 50 വയസ്സാകുന്നു. കൃഷിപരിപാലന മുറകളിൽ കീടനാശിനികളായ ഡിഡിറ്റി മുതലായ രാസവസ്തുക്കൾ വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് വന്യ ജീവികളേയും അവയുടെ ആവാസ സ്ഥാനങ്ങളേയും പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കുമെന്നും അതുവഴി മാനവകുലത്തിന്റെ നിലനിൽപ്പിനു തന്നെ ഭീഷണിയായിത്തീരുമെന്നുമുള്ള അവബോധം ജനങ്ങൾക്കും സർക്കാരുകൾക്കും നൽകാനായിട്ടാണ് അവർ ഈ പുസ്തകം രചിച്ചത്. രാജ്യത്തൊട്ടാകെ ഡിഡിറ്റി നിരോധിക്കുന്നതിനും മറ്റുകീടനിശിനികളൂടെ ഉപയോഗത്തിൽ നിയന്ത്രണമേർപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനും പുസ്തകം കാരണമായി. മനുഷ്യാരോഗ്യവും പരിസ്ഥിതിയും സംരക്ഷിക്കാനയി 1970-ൽ രൂപം കൊണ്ട പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണ സമിതി എന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ സംരഭത്തിനും പ്രചോദനമായിത്തീർന്നു റേച്ചലിന്റെ തൂലിക.
പ്രകൃതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിന് നൽകിയ സംഭാവനമാനിച്ച് റേച്ചൽ കാർസണ് മരണാനന്തര ബഹുമതിയായി അമേരിക്കയിലെ അത്യുന്നത സിവിലിയൻ ബഹുമതികളിലൊന്നായ പ്രസിഡൻഷ്യൽ മെഡൽ ഓഫ് ഫ്രീഡം നൽകുകയുണ്ടായി.

I had heard of Silent Spring for a long time, and when I stumbled upon it recently I knew right away I had to read this book. Rachel Carson wrote this when JFK was president, and he being the man he was took action straight away. The afterword, by Linda Lear was written in 98.
I can't believe that a book dealing with hydrocarbons could be so poetically written and so clearly explained. I can't believe that I've read such a book. The case studies are, of course, from America in the main, and from way back in the 1950's., a time when ecology didn't even exist. However, this is still a green bible today and essential reading for those concerned with the environment of our world, and the actions of corporate insanity.
In the book I read Silent Spring the author Rachel Carson is telling the story of everything that has to do with science and some parts of math. She is telling a story about the future in the planet, the air, land and water. Her investigation was trying to find out what has already silenced the voices of spring in countless towns in American? The book talks about all types of chemicals and things that can affect out body. The areas of science that are included in the book are nature, mostly things that has to do with the earth. The book doesn’t really includes math is all science and explaining the investigation. I didn’t really notice any connection because the book doesn’t includes math, is all science. The book was really difficult for me to because it has some hard words that were hard for me to understand. I don’t really have questions because the book pretty much explains everything. I really like that the author use many sources for the book, one question that I do have is why was so important for her to write this book especially about history? The book is hard to understand but I enjoy reading a little bit about the history of science all around the world.
